In the heat of the Texas summer, the Department of Agricultural
Sciences hosted a clinic for youth and adults eager to learn more
about raising and showing meat goats. The speakers, Glenn Avriett,
our own Dr. Kraig Peel, Mary Wilson, Mike Neumann, and Carrie Otto,
came to town on June 23rd to discuss the selection, management,
fitting, and showing of meat goats. Participants were treated to
a hamburger lunch as well as a sampling of goat meat prepared several
ways, for those who wanted to taste what they were learning about.
Representatives from various feed companies gave brief presentations
on their show goat products.
The 115 participants were given the opportunity to apply what
they had learned by partaking in a silent auction for approximately
20 prospect goats from the university's stock. Special thanks to
the two dedicated coordinators of this event: Brandon Gregson,
senior animal science major, and Dr. Stanley Kelley.
